Alberni Community & Women’s Services Society is seeking a full-time Children Who Witness Abuse Counsellor. This position supports children and youth that have been exposed to violence in the home/family environment. The successful candidate will provide individual and/or group counselling and support to children and youth between the ages of 3 and 18. Using a variety of methodologies (CBT, Art &Play Therapy, and Psycho-educational tools), you will assist these children to heal from trauma. Program Expectations: · Group Counseling for children, ages 5 through 18, who have witnessed abuse in their homes. · Initial assessments on children determining the impact of abuse, suitability and readiness for group · Facilitating a 10 week psycho-educational support group for children, addressing core issues · Supervising and working cooperatively with a male co-facilitator. · Counseling mothers and children (ages 3-18) on an individual basis, in person or by telephone Services include: · Assessment of suitability of the service to client’s needs · Crisis intervention · Short-term individual counseling · Establish counseling relationships that ensure emotional and psychological safety · Support to clients, both immediate and on a follow-up basis · Provision of resource information, and knowledge on the impact of abuse on children, parenting, etc We are looking for a candidate who: · Brings diversity to our team · Has a University or College degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care or related discipline, plus 2 years direct experience working with children (or equivalent education and experience) · Has a strong understanding of Violence Against Women and Children, Family Violence and trauma, the effects on children, and appropriate intervention strategies · Has proven skills and experience working with vulnerable children and youth · Believes strongly in a social justice and feminist approach to client service · Is well organized and capable of working independently within a larger team We encourage First Nations women to apply and self identify as well as any woman from a minority community.
